Annual Scholarships

A CMAC tradition since 1958
​
The Carlisle Musical Arts Club has awarded scholarships since 1958.  CMAC accepts video auditions each year and awards four-year scholarships of $3,000 ($750 per year) to students majoring in a field of music study at a college or university accredited in music. 
​
The winners of the 2024-25 scholarships are:
  • Elizabeth Carvell, Joan Frey Boytim Scholarship
  • Connor Petula, Edna Thornton Martin/Catherine Steck Memorial Scholarship
  • John Gleed, Edna Thornton Martin/Catherine Steck Memorial Scholarship

Elizabeth Carvell is a graduate of Boiling Springs High School.  She majors in Music Education at Ithaca College.

Connor Petula is a graduate of Boiling Springs High School.  He majors in Music Education at West Chester University.

John Gleed is a graduate of Big Spring High School.  He majors in saxaphone performance at The Peabody Institute of Music at John Hopkins University.

Antonio Centenera is a graduate of Trinity High School.  He majors in piano performance at Rice University Shepherd School of Music.

Michael Azar is a graduate of Cumberland Valley High School.  He majors in Biology and Music at Messiah University.

Andrew Hankes is a graduate of Carlisle High School.  He majors in flute performance at Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.

  • Awarded to high school senior majoring in music education, performance, technology, or musical theatre.

Joan Frey Boytim Scholarship
  • Awarded to high school senior majoring in music education or music performance.​

Eligibility:


Seniors graduating from or residing in the following school districts are eligible to apply for our scholarships:


  • Big Spring
  • Carlisle
  • Cumberland Valley
  • South Middleton


Audition Guidelines:
           
  • All instrumentalists and vocalists must provide their own accompanist.
  • Vocalists must sing from memory.  Memorization is optional for instrumentalists.  
  • Vocalists should be prepared to perform three (3) selections as follows: 
    •    song from the Baroque or the Classical Period
    •    aria or art song in French, German, Italian or Spanish
    •    art song in English or a Broadway song 
  • Instrumentalists should be prepared to play the following: 
    •    one movement of a concerto
    •    one solo piece from the standard repertoire for your particular instrument    
  • Pianists should be prepared to perform the following: 
    •    two solo pieces of contrasting styles or musical periods (no arrangements - originals only)
  • Explain something about the pieces being performed, such as the translation, composer, style, history
  • Submit two (2) written recommendations/references.  One recommendation must be from your private teacher and one from your high school band, chorus or orchestra director.  If  you do not have a private teacher, bring one recommendation from your school music instructor and one from an additional music  professional.
  • Applicants will be rated on the following criteria:
    •    musical talent and technical skill - rhythmic accuracy, tone quality, facility, articulation, phrasing, expression, expression and emotion 
    •    preparation 
    •    rapport with the audience - informs the audience about the music being performed
    •    stage presence - maturity and poise
    •    financial need

Note:  should a scholarship recipient drop out of college, their scholarship will be relinquished.



Annual Carlisle High School Music Awards


In addition to the two four-year college scholarships, the Carlisle Musical Arts Club also awards three $200 awards to a Carlisle High School senior member of the band, the chorus, and the orchestra.  These awards are granted on the recommendation of the high school music director.
